feedback on topics from people (like you?) before Fanime and can

Here's some suggestions from No-Name Anime (Fan Club):
- for fun and love
- organizers contribute what they can (time, equipment, buying things)
- no fixed roles (no president, no written charter)
- don't make promises that can't be kept
(people's expectations go way up if they pay in advance for anything)
- a responsible person should watch the AV equipment at all times
- make the last show a comedy so people leave happy
Funimation formerly had some info on starting a club at
www.operationanime.com/Main/dsp_starter_kit.htm.
Suggestions and Questions from the Un-Panel (and before and
after). These are just my notes and are probably incomplete. Sorry if
I forgot anyone's idea.
- Things to do besides just showing anime:
- Have a gaming hour with multi-player games on the big screen.
- Attract gamers to anime. There are anime RPG systems such as "Big
Eyes, Small Mouth" and players of collectible card games with anime
tie-ins might not be aware of the connection.
- Host a anime trivia "who wants to be a millionaire" game.
- Have a Halloween party.
- Make lanterns, celebrate the (Japanese Royal Family) Princess's
Birthday or other Japanese arts or culture related activities.
- "MST3K" shows where loud comments are allowed.
- Make anime educational. Host discussion. Have a quiz or related
reading list.
- Have an email list or other communication means for organizing
social events.
- According to rumor, the UC Davis club sings the opening and
ending songs of shows together.
- Discuss and possibly swap fan art created by members.
- Would it be possible to getting anime on 35mm film for special
showings?
- According to Sophie McNutt of Funimation --
Long answer: It costs around 20 grand to produce 35mm film of an
average length movie. It costs around $400 to be able to rent the film
from the production company to show. Large conventions like Otakon and
AX have heavy exposure and lots of press coverage so companies will
provide 35mm with no charge in exchange for that exposure. Unless a
club has the money, a theater, and the production company's trust that
the film will be returned, unfortunately, there's pretty much nothing
it can do.
- For college clubs, to provide continuity, try to identify
freshmen or sophomores who are officer candidates. Any suggestions
for alumni who run a college club?
